Notizia fresca, ecco i 30 che faranno parte della squadra che affronterà i test contro Francia e Italia

South Africa squad: Bjorn Basson, BJ Botha, Bakkies Botha, Schalk Burger, Juan de Jongh, Jean de Villiers, Jannie du Plessis, Jaque Fourie, Gio Aplon, Bryan Habana, Alistair Hargreaves, Butch James, Ricky Januarie, Ryan Kankowski, Zane Kirchner, Francois Louw, Victor Matfield, Wynand Olivier, Ruan Pienaar, Dewald Potgieter, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Danie Rossouw, John Smit (captain), Pierre Spies, Gurthrö Steenkamp, Morné Steyn, Flip van der Merwe.

In mezzo ci sono i tagli di Joe van Niekerk (e ci sta), e udite udite di Frans Steyn!
Sembra si voglia affidare a Zane Kirchner, anche se oltre ad aver fatto schifo l'anno scorso, ha fatto schifo pure la settimana scorsa!
Non vedo neanche Bismarck Du Plessis, che sia rotto?
Bah...

Sono 27, presumibilmente in attesa di Andries Bekker, Juan Smith (che ha chiesto una pausa per stare vicino a sua madre) e Fourie Du Preez (non so però per quanto ne abbia quest'ultimo), ciò che mi lascia perplesso è l'assenza di Deon Stegman e/o Duane Vermeulen, almeno per i test di giugno me li sarei aspettati.

Eppure con il 3N e un mondiale in avvicinamento sembra che PDV non abbia tanta voglia di testare la squadra in profondità... Questo gruppo di 30-32 persone rischia di arrivare spompatissimo al 3N, e se non li fermano per un po' tra novembre e marzo 2011, arriverà spompato pure al mondiale!

Frans Styen è da tempo ai ferri corti con PdV e il fatto che si sia ritirato da XV che giocavano col Galles mandando un SMS al suo allenatore di certo non ha favorito il riappacificamento!

Lui e Byrne si son scambiati 2 calci da paura: Byrne dai suoi 22 ai 22 del Sudafrica, nei quali raccoglie Steyn e la manda in touche a metà tra i 10 e i 22 del Galles...

James doveva partire 12 contro il Galles, ma i contratti dell'RFU&FFR prevedono che i giocatori vengano rilasciati alle nazionali nell'apposita finestra IRB, nella quale non è compreso il primo weekend di giugno.
Non so, dopo l'infortunio è tornato abbastanza in forma, non ai livelli del primo anno a Bath ma discreto. Giusto provarlo secondo me!

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers says that playing overseas reduces South African players’ capacity to compete with the best in the world.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday De Villiers left no doubt about his thoughts on the standard of foreign leagues and their adverse effect on the players competing in them.

De Villiers included Ulster prop BJ Botha, Munster midfielder Jean de Villiers and Bath flyhalf Butch James in his 27-man squad for the France Test, but all three players are widely known to be seeking a return to a South African franchise.

Racing Metro’s Frans Steyn and Toulon’s Joe van Niekerk were the notable exclusions and when probed about their omission De Villiers told keo.co.za: ‘Frans and I had an agreement that he would play just the one Test (against Wales on Saturday).

‘I’m worried about Frans. When he left here he was the best [fullback] in the world. I don’t think that is the case now. We’ve had a long chat about it. There’s always a possibility that he can come home.

De Villiers continued: ‘If you really watch the [Wales Test] closely you’ll notice that the overseas-based players are off the boil. They don’t have the speed to match the South African-based players. They’re not at the same level as the guys who play their rugby here. If players aren’t competing in the Super 14 they aren’t going to be ready to compete against the world’s best.’

De Villiers explained the concessions made for De Villiers and James saying: ‘With Jean I had a long chat just after he left and always knew he was going to be back in South Africa on 1 June,’ De Villiers explained, even though the Munster man is yet to confirm his return home. ‘He called me soon after he arrived there and said he had made the wrong decision.

Che non corra buon sangue tra i due si sapeva... comunque stamattina altra perla regalata dal baffo:

Ok, però lo sa il coach che Steyn da febbraio 2009 a maggio 2010 si sarà sparato all'incirca 55 partite (tra S14, Test, Tri-Nation e Top14)? Contate quante settimane ci sono in quei 15 mesi e fate 2 conti.
Vagli poi a spiegare che là si difende un pelino meglio che nel S14...

Magari ha ragione, Steyn e Van Niekerk non hanno brillato, ma dove lo trovi uno che spara il famigerato "bagigio" da 60m, indipendentemente che sia di drop o piazzato, che sia in altura o in pianura, che sia a inizio o fine stagione?
